About us

Sisters of Mary Morning Star

We are an international community of contemplative sisters. Our vocation is a life of silent prayer in Eucharistic Adoration. We are here because we love Jesus and want to know and love Him more. Each day is punctuated by two hours of silent prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. The celebration of the Eucharist is the summit of our day, followed by a prolonged time of silent thanksgiving.

Manual work is also of great importance in our life as it is essential for the human person and helps us earn our living. Another characteristic of our community is our missionary spirit. This is firstly lived in prayer, and also by being a visible and accessible presence in all the places where we have convents.

Our life is rooted in Monastic tradition and so is marked by prayer of the Divine Office, Eucharistic Adoration, manual work and biblical studies. We open our prayer life and our formation to those who want join us and who come to be renewed in our monasteries. We are also sometimes called to lead moments of prayer outside of our convents.

Our community came to Waterford in 2019 at the request of Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan. Thanks to the great generosity of the Franciscans we live in their former Friary in the center of Waterford City. It is a great joy to know that we enter into the religious presence that has been here from the 13th century. We have opened a new chapel where we gather each day for the celebration of Holy Mass, to sing the Divine Office and to pray in silent adoration of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. All are welcome to join us there for prayer.

A monastic shop is also open on weekday afternoons where we sell the craft work we make here in our monastery. We rely entirely on donations and the sale of our craft work to sustain our way of life. Visitors or those looking to entrust prayer intentions are very welcome to knock at our door on weekday afternoons.

We are here to pray for you!
